Still testing with Polaroid!

Even in this digital age, I'm still using Polaroid to evaluate my photos before committing them to pixels. I have been using a portable DVD player made by Polaroid Corporation attached to my Nikon D2X. I'm sure their are several brands of portable DVD players to choose from. I use Bogan Super Clamps to attach the DVD player to my tripod. I usually only use this set-up when am lighting or their are other at the shoot that need to see a more detailed preview.

This system works well for me, I hope it does for you.

Springerville Power Plant

The photographs contained in this post are from a recent assignment for an editorial client, Rural Electric Magazine. The magazine sent me to Springerville, AZ to photograph a new power plant being built by Tri-State Transmission and Generation. Tri-State also happens to be a client of mine as it turns out. I had been to the Springerville plant twice before while shooter earlier annual reports for Tri-State. Tri-State is putting in a 450 megawatt generator at this site. The Springerville plant had two other generators operated by another company.

The control room has been completed enough for testing. I lit the control room using 2 Nikon SB-800 strobes pointed at the ceiling with a type of blue gel over the strobes. I also had another SB-800 pointed at the operator seated in front of the console. I had an opportunity to climb inside the boiler to capture a few cool images.

Going to the Beach

Beach, North Dakota that is. I've just returned from a one day shoot in the southwestern corner of North Dakota. I was shooting for a repeat client, Pioneer Drilling out of Texas. I was asked to shoot a new clean rig which has a 1500 HP electric powered rig. The weather was cold, and in between storm systems I flew into Bismarck, ND and drove the 140 miles to Beach, ND. The rig was located around 15 miles NE of Beach. I drove straight to the rig to shoot sundown. When I arrived, the sun was out with cloud bank in the west at the horizon. Low clouds rolled in and soon I was shut out of any hope of sunset. I spent the night in Beach, and then returned for sunrise. The results of this shoot are contained within this blog. I hope you like them.

Photo Talk Radio Listeners

Welcome Photo Talk Radio listeners! and welcome to those who have just ran across my blog.

I have just finished a live interview with Howard Lipin and Michael Garcia with Photo Talk Radio. I want to thank Howard and Michael for the opportunity to visit with your listeners. I hope you found the interview interesting and informative. If you did not have a chance to hear the interview you can hear it by following this link David's Interview

This photograph to the left reminds me of the paths we all take in life. You just never know where they may lead you.

Photography has taught me to see, it is remarkable to me how little most people see as they move throughout their daily life's. There are picture everywhere; design and graphics, color and shadow, starkness and mood are present in all things. As an annual report photographer you must be innovative in all aspects of your art; your application of technique; light; your use of equipment, models, products and your relationships with art directors or editors.

You need to feel equally comfortable roving in a helicopter over an off-shore drilling platform, lighting in a laboratory setting or shooting a CEO in Manhattan. You need to be an effective communicator, comfortable with all employees from management to support field staff, and sensitive to the political and inter-personal issues in the work place. You must be an excellent problem solver, adapting quickly to changing conditions and technical challenges, while remaining focused on the assignment goals and adhering to practical time and financial constraints. "These are the very aspects to corporate assignment work that one needs to be focused on." I should just leave it here. Thanks for reading.

Ring Light

Thought I'd make a post regarding my new homemade "Ring Light".

I made the ring light out of PVC and lamp sockets. I made a basic octagon, running the wiring through the pipe to each of the 8 lights you see. It measures 3 ft across and weighs almost nohing. I couldn't wait to try my new ring light out.

My first subject to be photographed is Heather Lutze, she's an Internet Marketing Consultant-my internet marketing consultant. More about that later.

Heather asked me to do a portrait of her and as well as photographing a "marketing concept" that she is currently working on. I thought that would be the perfect time to try the ring light. I like the catch-light in her eyes as well as the jelly beans.

If you are looking for a fantastic Internet Marketing Conustant, I recommend you visit Lutze Consulting at lutzeconsulting.com.
